Fix the system, fix the problem

Greetings from A Bigger Vision Films!

We've been preparing for our fall events and assessing how we can have an even deeper impact when sharing the messages of BEYOND THE BRIDGE along side the panels of experts and stakeholders that accompany each event:

  • Incrementalism doesn't work. A community must decide to solve the problem with this guiding principle: failure is not an option.

  • Leadership must come from the top. Mayors, city managers, county executives, and others must lead, if only by endorsing the efforts of the people who know what they're doing. On that note, several of our upcoming screenings this fall are organized by Mayors and County Execs. We will continue to grow this trend so the impact on the communities we visit can be immediate.

  • A homeless response system must be built on a foundation of housing and supportive services. Shelters are essential and irreplaceable within a functional system, but sheltering people cannot be the end goal.

  • Homelessness is local. It requires all power sectors in every community (business, faith, mainstream healthcare, philanthropy, law enforcement, etc.) to have direct roles within the homeless response system.

  • Homelessness is a linear series of systems failures, not a people problem. Fix the systems, fix the problems.

  • Deep collaboration means the entire homeless response system coordinates like successful teams or businesses do. Silos must come down.

We are most proud of making a watchable film on a subject most people passionately avoid. Now we're working out how to translate that formula beyond the film, to show communities that they have agency to solve their homelessness crisis. We're evolving our model so systems integration experts either travel with us to events to meet with local decision makers and stakeholders, or arrange to meet with these community leaders in the following months. We hope to announce partners in this effort soon.

It's been a long, tough, strange road, but we love what we do.
